Sowing with the first rains
In June the monsoon reaches Rayalaseema and the whole village turns to the fields. The soil is ploughed — often still with bullocks — and seed goes in by hand along the furrows.

Months of tending
For the next three to six months the family weeds, watches for pests and hopes for the right rain at the right time. Millets and pulses are hardy — they ask for little water and give back a dependable harvest.
- Korra & green gram: about 3 months
- Red gram & turmeric: 6 months or more

Harvest and threshing
When the heads turn golden the crop is cut, bundled and brought to the threshing floor. Grain is separated from the stalk and the straw becomes fodder for the cattle — nothing is wasted.
- We buy the harvest from the farmer directly
- No village trader or commission agent takes a cut
