నవధాన్యాలు
The nine sacred grains
One grain for each of the Navagrahas — for puja, homam, griha pravesam and the wedding paalikalu. Bought from farmers, cleaned and packed separately in Badvel.
Arranged as in a Navagraha mandala — Surya's wheat at the centre, north at the top.

Navagraha puja & shanti
Each grain is placed before its graha on the mandala — often on the graha's day of the week, or as a remedy suggested by the family priest.
హోమం
Homam
A small measure of each grain is offered into the fire during Navagraha and other homams.
గృహ ప్రవేశం
Griha pravesam
Many families keep navadhanyalu in the puja for a new home, asking every graha's blessing before moving in.
పాలికలు
Wedding paalikalu
The nine grains are sown in clay pots a few days before a Telugu wedding; healthy sprouts are a sign of a fruitful, growing family.
పాలికలు
Sowing paalikalu for a wedding
- 1Soak a small handful of each grain separately overnight.
- 2Fill the paalikalu (clay pots) with soft soil or soil mixed with a little manure.
- 3Sow the soaked grains on top, cover lightly with soil and sprinkle water.
- 4Keep the pots in indirect light and sprinkle water morning and evening.
- 5Sprouts usually appear in 3–5 days — in time for the wedding rituals.
Start about five days before the muhurtham so the sprouts are fresh on the day.
